Weekend on the Rock: September 9-11

With this weekend being the tenth anniversary of the September 11 Attacks on the Pentagon and World Trade Center, we’re including some recommendations for how to commemorate the date on Bainbridge Island and in Kitsap County.

1. Jalopies

JalopiesWhen: Friday, September 9, 7:30 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge Performing Arts, , 200 Madison Ave. N
Why:

  • This solo performance piece by Mark Cherniack focuses on the theme of memory, which seems appropriate this weekend. It tells the true story of nine retirement residents striving to hold onto their way of life in the only home they know.
  • Profits will be donated to the American Alzheimer’s Association.

2. Friends of the Library Book Sale

When: Saturday, September 10, 1-6 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge Public Library, 1270 Madison Ave.
Why: Because you can great deals on some worthwhile books.

3. Fall at the Mall: Remembering 9/11

When: Saturday, September 10, 4 p.m.
Where: Kitsap Mall
Why: This is a more direct way to commemorate the 9/11 anniversary. Films of the destruction of the Twin Towers will be shown. You can contribute to a remembrance board and learn about the Kitsap 9/11 memorial project.

Johnson Farm4. Work Party

When: Saturday, September 10, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
Where: Johnson Farm  (Fletcher Bay Rd. and Johnsonville Rd.).
Why:

  • You can help get the Johnson Farm ready for the Harvest Fair.
  • You get a free, catered lunch.

5. PAWS Dinner and Auction

When: Saturday, September 10,
Where: Wing Point Golf and Country Club, 811 Cherry Ave.
Why: Great cause , lots of fun, fantastic auction items . Even if you can’t make it, you can buy a remote golden ticket to try to win your favorite prize.

Kitsap 9/116. Gathering at Kitsap 9/11 Memorial

When: Sunday, September 11, all day.
Where: Kitsap 9/11 Memorial, Island Lake, Poulsbo (about two miles north of Silverdale at 1087 N.W. Island Lake Road).
Why: Here’s a chance to reflect on the sad events of ten years ago at our own local memorial. Visitors to the 9/11 Sunday memorial are invited to take a stone, contemplate the event, and then place the stone on the memorial or toss it into the lake.

7. The 9/11 Decade: Legacy and Challenge

When: Sunday, September 11, 10-11:15 a.m.
Where: Cedars Unitarian Universalist Church, meeting at The Island School, 8553 NE Day Rd.
Why: Two local ministers who served near Washington, D.C., ten years ago will reflect on the inspiring spirit that emerged immediately following that day’s attacks amid great grief and a national sense of both our vulnerabilities and strengths.

8. Afternoon on the Trails

When: Sunday, September 11, 12-4 p.m.
Where: IslandWood, 4450 Blakely Ave.
Why: Here is a way to spend some reflection time outdoors in a beautiful natural setting.

9. Mozart Requiem

When: Sunday, September 11, 3:00 p.m.
Where: Island Church, 9624 Sportsman Club Rd.
Why:

  • In commemoration of the tenth anniversary of the events of September 11, 2001, the Chorale is joining choirs around the world in the Rolling Requiem, a performance of Mozart’s Requiem Mass in D minor. Singers and instrumentalists from the Kitsap area will be joining members of the Chorale and the Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra for this solemn event in remembrance of those who lost their lives, of the survivors, and of the firefighters and police officers whose bravery saved many.
  • You can bring a nonperishable food item to donate to Helpline House.

The suggested donation ($10, children and students $5).

Finisterra 10. Finisterra Trio at Bainbridge Commons

When: Sunday, September 11, 4 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge Commons, 402 Brien Drive.
Why:

  • Chamber music helps put things in perspective when one is reflecting on a day that didn’t make much sense.
  • Simon James on violin, Kevin Krentz on cello, and Tanya Stambuk on piano won the Silver Medal at the Zinetti International Chamber Music Competition in Italy (beating out groups from 20 different countries) and won the Audience Prize in the Greenlake National Chamber Music Competition.
